On June 27, the Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places announced its decision to restore the site of the 1921 Battle of Blair Mountain labor conflict to the National Register, which should help protect the site from mountaintop removal coal mining.

March 22 is World Water Day, and to celebrate, we teamed up with our partners in the Tri-State Water Defense group for a couple of events.
If it is developed, this hub would bring a massive build-up of the petrochemical industry along the Ohio River from Beaver, PA, beyond Huntington, WV, and into Catlettsburg, KY. It would include a spur from the Kanawha River. Champions of the proposed hub see this as a good thing. But, we know otherwise from the experience of people who live near petrochemical plants.
Dianne Bady was one of the principal founders of OVEC. Dianne, 67, succumbed to cancer on October 23, 2017 at Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, WV. Her husband Rick, her son Aaron, her sister Monica McFarland, and OVEC staff were with her in her final hours.

In December, OVEC organized a one-day, statewide meeting called It’s A Gas at Jackson’s Mill 4-H Camp, which was attended by representatives of organizations across West Virginia working on various aspects of deep shale oil and gas “development.”
On June 15, we held our first forum on the Rogersville Shale in Huntington. About 200 people attended. WV Public Radio and TV stations WSAZ and WOWK aired stories on the forum.

On September 30, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia upheld the Environmental Protection Agency’s veto of a permit for one of the largest and most extreme mountaintop removal coal mines ever proposed in Appalachia: Arch Coal’s Spruce No. 1 Mine in Logan County.
A landmark June decision of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia found that high conductivity from mountaintop removal mines owned by Alex Energy and Elk Run Coal Company violates key clean-water protections.
In July of 2013, Bill Hughes sent a detailed e-mail to the owner-operator of Jay-Bee Oil & Gas’ Lisby Marcellus Shale gas operation. The well pad is about six miles southeast of Middlebourne, on Big Run Road in Tyler ounty, WV, and it’s been a problem for people living nearby since the operation “first pushed dirt,” Hughes says.
Don’t drink the water. Don’t shower. Don’t cook with it or wash your clothes. There’s half a century gone. Gone most of us who went to Elk Grade School, gone, too. Gone the white frame homes, the small brick duplexes, the school we marched to for our polio shots. Gone the quick-tongued streams, gone the valleys, filled with mountaintop, gone from the fog-draped skyscape. It’s licorice scented air, not sun-dried cotton sheets, licorice wafting from the tap.
Perhaps those buried in the Jarrell Family Cemetery can rest a little easier now. In August, family members of the deceased filed a lawsuit in Boone County Court aimed at repairing and protecting the cemetery from further desecration.
